Day 18- No more diversions please….20/5/17

A great nights sleep once we finally got settled. We got into bed and both said ‘these sheets feel terrible “. I inspected the sheets there were no sheets just the mattress cover..I chucked a few clothes on easy, as I had hubbys tshirt on as my one and only nightie was not yet dry and went to try and find someone. I was not hopeful as there apeared to be no permanent reception, however I spotted the guy who”d booked us in trying to leave so I managed to grab him and acquire sheets, much nicer. What happened to all this german efficiency, no discount for making our own bed.!

We set off into chilly sunshine past the rest of the sights of Speyer just as all the coaches were arriving.Beautiful ride through woodlands and along flood dykes with the odd power station thrown in Bird hides everwhere but we only spotted 1 stork..A headwind made it hard work and my cables are needing a little bit of tensioning so a few stops to adjust them, then my front brakes kept sticking…hubbys tough road has not caused any problems yet… We were told how to do adjust my bike when I bought the bike but we were also given a lot of other information aswell!

We were following our guide book today as the alternative route on the current side of the river was having all the dykes reinforced due to the floods in 2015. However before we even got to that area we were diverted as this area was vetting its flood dykes feinforced hoeever for once a well signposted diversion. So as instructed by our trusty guide book we took the ferry to the other side and met quite a few touring motorcyclists in the process, including some very old bmws, much to hubbys delight. A quick lunch and off on to the cycle route to Karlsruhe we had hardly gone 200metres when we met diggers and the path all being dug up. After yesterdays rain it was a mud bath..eek 18kms pushing through mud.Thank goodness it was Saturday and noone was working so we could sneak past and it was for only about half a kilometre….phew.

A stunning ride into Karlsruhe through royal forest dating back to 1800, no deer spotted though and then entering Karlsruhe via the castle gardens and riding to our hotel through the zoo gardens!

A bustling pleasant city, managed to get a vegetable fix at a Thai restaurant tonight so will ward off scurvy for another few days… off to France tomorrow very exciting..

Ps Just to compljcate our navigation all of central Karlsruhe is being dug up, they are putting the roads and trains underground to fully pedestrianise the centre…hello Perth are you listening…
