Day 11 -spectacular Moselle Gorges

An adequate breakfast at the guest house but none of the extras like cereal or eggs, which meant we had to reconsider the idea of a 3 hour walk from Bremm up very steep vineyards on ladders and chains. Pity it would have been exciting however just aswell as it started to rain and wet ladders would have not been much fun.

Cycling varied from block tracks next to the river with tree root lumps coming up, gravel bumpy tracks, a couple of steep hills and cycle tracks right next to the road. The gorge walls became very steep and more wooded, probably the best scenery of the whole Moselle.

After seeing loads of cyclists yesterday very few were out in the rain today. We managed a coffee stop before the heavy rain so we could sit outside .The waitress used a window cleaner scraper to get the water off the table, what a good idea.

The rain then became quite heavy so full rain gear was donned, even those falling apart rain boottees were put on.We decided to find some  lunch but the village we turned off had Tuesday as a day off. There was one hotel/restaurant which had a board out the front and a covered area under the balcony where a full family; grandad all the way down to little children, were taking rain coats off.I went up to check if it was open before we took anything off sure enough it was closed.I came down and broke the news to everyone. Some very down faces!

We were well settled in the next cafe before they arrived. So we were greeted with “finally open”.We’ve seen quite a few families on cycling holidays with the dad pulling a trailer with all the camping gear on, also  school parties on bikes with teachers pushing very wobbly kids along.

Somehow we were on the wrong side of the river for our guidebook. We realised as we passed through a very scenic village and recognised it from the guide book who said we’d see it from the other side. This village Beilstein is used in mediavel films all the time. We caught the next ferry back onto the other side, though I’m not sure it made any difference as all roads lead to Cochem.

We arrived in Cochem one of the most visited towns in Germany full of more of those half timbered houses but stunningly overshadowed by a huge castle just like out of a fairy tale. The tourist bureau gave us a choice of 3 bed and breakfasts we took the one in the Old Town.

It was a small room, very modern fittings, but great location and comfy bed and down a back alley way so very quiet. We checked out the town including a guy standing in the air? Magnetic field??and then after dinner walked up to the fairytale castle, breathtaking views of the Moselle and the town.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain later that evening so no wifi hence delayed post!

Cafe Pension 76 euros

Great breakfast in the cafe itself. Has fridge and sitting room.Plenty of rooms if there are a few of you travelling together, easy access to town and castle. Hubby could smell cooking but cafe shut by 6pm.
