The day didnt start too well. I woke still with the effects of the bee sting, face and lips swollen up again over night.A stray mosquito had also been trying to feast on me all night long. So i was looking forwards to a short ride to Prague it wasnot to be.
The signeage for route 11 had disappered with the roadworks in the middle of Tyn etc so took us 5 incorrect kms to get on the right route. An elderly gentleman had helped us out pointing at a map in czech. It was then 10kms uphill so a coffee stop was required by 15kms.The route was not that great with cars wwhizzing past scarily close, but through very pretty forest.
After another 15kms we ended up on a proper greenway ie.track rather than road. No sign of pub for lunch so at a proper picnic stop we pooled our resources and came up with bread, honey and a tin of sardines, plus a few plums.
We peddled on and came out in suburbia and a big sign with a cross through route 11, route 11 had terminated!! My green way book (no doubt out of date) showed it ended in central park Prague. Another sign showed Prague to be 18kms away so we chose a route which said centrum on it. This took us off on a track through woods and then stopped. We saw another track for centrum and followed that which also terminated. Time to get the notepad out, it is only wifi but it does show us where we were.We followed various roads going north and then I got totally confused with my notepad not orientating to north tallying with hubbys compass on his phone. We asked a lady who indicated which direction and then to follow a bike path to Branic and turn right at the river.
At least thats what we thought she said as she only spoke czech.!!Off we set down a fairly busy road and then we turned right onto a very busy road. It did say Prague centrum so we were going in the right direction .Suddenly ahead the road colour turned to green we were headin g onto a motorway. We made a hasty retreat and got off the roads and there in front of us was the cycle route to Branic… a miracle. This was a lovely route through forests but often on dirt tracks.even saw a beautiful bright red squirrel. At last we reached the river and we turned right heading towards Prague centrum
We were doing very well till we got near the Charles bridge which we had to cross. People were packing the pavements on the lead up to the bridge so we had to walk. Pleasant looking at all the amazing architecture. Our hotel wasnt too far away across the bridge.Thank goodness we’d made it.
A 3 course
Meal with a few dark beers for me was in order!!
Note the trabant above a car made for soviet union by east germany at least 30 years old.Prague photos of way in above and great historic restaurant, the Red Lion!
