Yesterday was one of those mega days, no morning tea stop presented itself. Then when we arrived at the historic town of Torgau half of the access was barricaded off with renovations, worse than Dresden! It was a good lunch stop and did enjoy the atmospheric market square, fountains were working here. Countryside varied between dry and brown and then little patches of green where that area had clearly had rain.
The dreaded diversions would suddenly take us off between ploughed fields on terrible tractor rutted gravel tracks with minimal signeage. Then the odd stretches of cobbled cycle paths meant we were totally shaken to bits.
Accomodation seemed limited so we kept going and ended up in a rather grim place called Prietzsche, the castle is now used for youth groups. It had a few houses with claims to historic people but that was it. We stayed at the hotel which was ok but no wifi however food was very good. They did specialise in tne salted herrings yum, yum. 74kms of been shaken to bits left me feeling worse for wear.
Still today a great breakfast and sunshine meant a fresh start. We crossed on the ferry to the right bank and had lovely little villages to cycle through, very pretty. We stopped at Elster for morning tea great Hotel zum Anker right on Elbe looked a nice place to overnight.
We then cycled through the heathland so sad to see some of it still so brown after the summer. The wind meanwhile had got up so we were heading into a strong north westerly with minimal protection across the heathland.Speed reduced to 12kms an hour!
At last we reached Wittenberg a beautiful historic scenic town . It would have been good to spend at least a day here.A great lunch, a vietnamese with a large serve offering for lunch, just what we needed. After lunch it was peddling through forests and along the Elbe. We kept meeting up with 2 girls and then another lone cyclist. We stopped for afternoon tea at a cafe in the woods, so then everybody else stopped. So we all got chance to catch up. The girls reckoned on the town of Worlitz as a really nice place to stay in, which turned out a lot better than hubbys choice which looked like Colditz as we passed through.
No problems finding a pension. Worlitz is a town surrounded by gardens and castles built by a dutch princess so quite picturesque. A perfect day today and a sensible 62kms.
Pension on Park
Worlitz
wifi yes!! Good room, yes because were cyclists!!
Weve yet to see if we get a good nights sleep with 2 80 year olds plus zimmer frames chatting in garden very loudly…..makes a change from the loud party in Dresden..
