Here we are sitting in the Orange room of Pension Heinrich after a beer in the cafe and hubby also had to try the blackberry cake. Cute little room with a balcony and an upstairs bedroom.
Breakfast in Worlitz Pension am Post was a bit disappointing this morning how can you cycle all day on an egg and a slice of bread?
Scenic ride out of Worlitz past all the fancy guard houses built in the 16th century to keep the dutch princess happy. The ride was along a high dyke through the woodlands, beautiful, full of birds, and we even saw a marten , he was quite big and did scurry off without posing for a photograph.Apparently quite a pest in Germany as they like chewing up the insides of german car engines.
No cafes open when we passed the odd gasthaus, sunday morning we were being a bit optimistic. We cycled into Aken a dreary town, a couple of old watch towers as its only claim to fame, we settled for a coffee and an apple tea at the fall back place of the donor kebab shop!
We then had to take the ferry across the Elbe . The route on the left bank was not possible because the tributary into the Elbe was too dry for its ferry to run. The middle Elbe is a UNESCO biodiverse heritage area but its not looking too good at the moment. Trees are very brown and the supposedly lush green meadows look like straw. Theres been 50%less rain every month since March, and one of the hottest springs and summers on records. No sign of any rain with temperatures climbing to 31C on Tuesday.
A very rural cycle ride continued through forests and quiet country lanes.Signeage was quite small, locals must have been getting fed up with lost cyclists. One front garden had a big sign pointing the way. Quite a few locals also pointed out the direction to Hamburg, a bit premature I think its another 400kms a way.
We hadnt booked anything for today so Heinrichs cafe and pension looked very inviting 53kms is enough for a Sunday. MAgdeburg can wait till tomorrow…
Photos wont upload so no snaps till tomorrow.
