Delayed post from yesterday as Tangermund was such a scenic old town no time for blogging. Ok, nothing to do with the fact that we ate at a greek restaurant and hubby was unable to partake of his apperitif of ouza so i drank 2….and then we got given dinner finishers of ouza…. Tangermund was one of the last places in the second world war that the germans surrendered from and only one bridge over the Elbe was blown up so it remained intact. Industrialisation has happened around the town aswell so its heritage has remained.
Scenic ride in to Tangermunde, we were also cycling on what was known as tbe Wild animal way, finally did see some wild deer spot them in the photos!!Signeage was generally good and cycling surfaces usual variations of forest tracks, broken pavers and occasionally on brand new quiet roads, zoom!
No sign of coffee anywhere so we decided to stop in an environmental centre for a break, yes they served coffee, fresh apple juice and cake, hubby very happy. Exhibits a bit dilapidated but good to browse through, showing the improvements to the Elbe. In 1960 in old East Germany the river was so toxic fish were dead and you couldnt swim in it. Lead, cadmium etc and phenolic acid were very high. Now very much improved and water cleansing centres now all along the Elbe and the fish are back.
Opposite the environmetal centre was an electricity brick power building which had homes for bats, birds, bees, hornets etc all placed on it to encourage local wildlife, see photo.Ok I also wondered why you’d have the birds living next to their tucker of bees and hornets..
Interesting old wooden windmill aswell in one of the towns en route but not one of the really ancient 12th century ones. Tangermund lost half the town to fire in 1600s so not all of the original houses were preserved. The poor woman blamed for the fire was of course burned at the stake, gruesome times.
Fantastic 16th century organ in St Stephens cathedral one of the 10 most important organs, in Europe alas nobody playing it till Saturday.
Beautiful pension, see photo with flowers, in Tangermunde ,
we both managed to avoid knocking ourselves out on the sloping ceiling, still intact to pedal on.
Pension Am Buhnenkopf
19 Fischerlange strasse
17th century half timbered house, great breakfast…even bacon..
