Day 25- Are any ferries working across Elbe?

The Tangermund visitor centre had signs up saying next 2 ferries towards Hamburg across the Elbe were unable to work because of low water levels in the drought stricken Elbe.

This was a problem as we’d booked a pension on the other side of the Elbe!!the tourist information lady thought the ferry over the tributary the Havel was working but wasnt sure.

We set off uncertain . It was warming up fast heading up to 29C and humid. The paths were terrible but the small roads nearby had signs on saying no bikes. Paths were overgrown and pavers missing, we had one good section only to be thrown onto the worst cobblestones ever, huge holes and ridges..Still it wasnt as bad as the bad path on top of the dyke with a sheer drop , so all relative.

Hubby was worrying about the ferry across the Havel  so  I rang up the visitor centre in Havelberg, the ferry was running but only to sept 24th..phew.

Hubby hanging out for a coffee just as we thought we’d found somewhere I read the notice board not open till 1130am, it was 1050. We would have waited 10 minutes but not 40.

We peddled on dejected hubby cheered up when I saw a bakery sign. In we went Obara Bakery in Berge a lovely old lady made us tea and coffee and of course the cake.

She was so delighted we were from Australia and got her visitor book out, 2 Australians had been through from Melbourne 3 weeks ago. So we filled in the visitor book, drawing a map of Australia and putting Perth on the map.A good little break.

On to the ferry which was running and then a lovely route through forests where we saw the largest oak tree ever.

Interesting town of Havelberg with the Havel splitting  coming into the Elbe such that we are on an island tonight. The old cathedral is massive, scariest building Ive been in a long time.It is surrounded by old cloisters, quite spooky.

With all the ferries not working we checked in with the tourist information office, weve been given a map for the big diversion tomorrow….
